A Deep Dive into Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow is also called lateral epicondylitis. It is an overuse injury that causes inflammation, tendonitis and lateral elbow pain at the origin of extensor carpi radialis brevis.Females are commonly involved than male.

There is a history of repetitive activities or overuse such as playing tennis. Aching lateral elbow pain that tends to become worse with activity. Pain may radiate into the proximal forearm. Initially pain resolves with rest but may progress to pain that disrupts sleep. Severe cases may cause weakness in the hand and wrist.

Treatment

  • Initially RICE, NSAIDS and activity modifications. 
  • Restore normal range of motion. Progressive strengthening exercises should include shoulder, arm and forearm.
  • Initial isometric exercise should be followed by gradual addition of submaximal isotonic exercise. 
  • Electrical stimulation, Ultrasound may also be used. 
  • Lateral counterforce bracing has been recommended. 
  • Change sports technique to avoid excessive wrist extension.  
  • Soft tissue massage to help relieve symptoms. 
  • Isometric training of wrist extensor muscle.
